The last airworthy Mirage IIIDS in Europe performed its very last flight on Thursday 25th of May, 2023 , from Payerne Air Base. The aircraft operated and maintained by the association "Espace Passion" and the museum of military aviation "Clin d'Ailes" in Payerne was still performing passenger flights until recenlty.
The Swiss federal aviation agency, FOCA, deemed that some parts of the airframe, in particular of its engine, were too old and that it was not worth taking the risk of a potential failure or incident with the aircraft in flight.
To end the story properly, the museum obtained the clearance to operate two last flights on that 25th of May, allowing fans and families to gather one last time to see the plane in its element. A last hommage took the form of a formation fly-by by the delta plane with 4 swiss F/A-18 Hornet and one French Mirage 2000
The retired Colonel Thierry Goetschman, former head of the Swiss Air Forces pilot school, performed these two flights, and it was also for him the last in the cockpit of a jet.
